Coach MacLeod enters his second year as head coach at the University of Notre Dame. He succeeded Digger Phelps on May 4, 1991 as mentor after a successful collegiate and NBA career. He guided the Fighting Irish to an 18-15 record last season.
MacLeod will always cherish his triumphs during the 18 seasons he spent in the NBA, leading Phoenix and Dallas to their best seasons ever.
After resurrecting the basketball program at Oklahoma, where he put together a 90-69 record in six seasons, MacLeod spent 13 1/2 seasons as head coach of the Phoenix Suns (1973-'87), two full seasons with Dallas and most of 1990 with the New York Knicks.
His 707-657 mark makes him one of only eight coaches to top the 700 mark in NBA victories. Only Red Auerbach with Boston has been with one NBA team longer that MacLeod's tenure with Phoenix.
With a 53-29 record in his first year with the Mavericks in 1987-88, MacLeod became the 11th coach in NBA history to record five seasons of 50 or more victories. He took his teams to the NBA playoffs 11 times in 18 seasons, four times guiding clubs to the conference finals. His 1975-76 Suns team claimed the Western Conference title and took the Boston Celtics to six games before losing in the championship final.
