Tom Heinsohn is a former Boston Celtics' standout and NBA Hall-of-Famer. His accomplishments as a player were recognized in the retirement of his number 15 and his selection to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He coached two Celtics squads to NBA championships and he continues to excel as the team's voice on all televised games.
He donned the Celtics' uniform from 1956-65 and was a principal member of eight championship teams. Heinsohm was selected the NBA Rookie of the Year in1957, was a member of the All-NBA Second Team four times (1961, '62, '63, '64), and was honored with six berths to the NBA All-Star Game (1957, '61-65). A spectacular performer on the court, Tom owned a killer soft hookshot among a wide array of offensive moves that were nearly impossible to stop. He was the team's most proficient playoff scorer during the successful championship drives in 1957, '60, '61, and '63. He averaged 18.6 points in 654 regular season contests and 19.8 points and 9.2 boards in 104 postseason games.
Four seasons after his retirement as a player, Tom was named head coach of the Celtics. He directed the 1974 and 1976 Boston teams to World Championship titles, won Atlantic Division crowns five times, was picked the league's Coach of the Year in 1973, and collected a 427-263 (.619) regular season record and a 47-33 (.588) playoff mark. He was elected to the NBA Hall of Fame in 1985-86.
Tom is entering his 19th year by broadcasting the Celtics' basketball on Fox Sports New England. He has also served as the team's play-by-play man for the last six years. Heinsohn handled CBS' NBA coverage for seven years and also did commentary for NCAA basketball for four years on CBS.
When Tom is not covering basketball, he is a chartered life underwriter in the insurance fieldand, as an accomplished artist, Tom's works have graced art shows across the country.
Tom and his wife, Helen, live in Newton, Massachusetts.
