Lakers Split on First Day of Western Division Championships

April 22, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, IND. - Gina Mieras stopped 17 shots as third-seeded Mercyhurst (14-7, 6-2 CWPA) defeated Grove City, the six seed, in the opening round of the Western Division Championships.

The Laker defense did not allow a goal in the first half, after which Mercyhurst held a 3-0 lead.

Christine Somera and Christie Haibach each had two goals and an assist. Carrie Willison had a goal and two assists and Cassie Rand notched three steals.

In the nightcap, the Lakers fell to Michigan 19-6. The Lakers fell to 14-8 overall and 6-3 in the CWPA.

Rand, Willison, and Somera each scored two goals. Willison had three assists, Tessa DiLoreto two, and Rand one. Rand and Haibach had two steals apiece. Mieras made 14 saves.

The Lakers face Slippery Rock University Sunday at 10:30 in the third place match.
