Lakers Split Two at Western Division Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Mercyhurst lost a 9-7 first round match to Slippery Rock, but rebounded with a 13-3 win over Washington & Jefferson at the Western Division Championships hosted by Michigan.

Slippery Rock 9, Mercyhurst 7
Mercyhurst led 7-4 after two periods, but Slippery Rock outscored the Lakers 5-0 in the third to pick up the win.

Carrie Willison, who finished the match with three goals, scored twice in the first period as Mercyhurst jumped ahead 4-2. Christine Somera found the back of the net twice in the second as the Lakers extended the advantage to 7-4.

Willison also had three assists and three drawn ejections. Somera had two assists, two steals, and three drawn ejections.

Gina Meiras made eight saves.

Mercyhurst 13, Washington & Jefferson 3
Carrie Willison scored six goals as Mercyhurst defeated Washington & Jefferson, 13-3, to advance to the fifth place game of the Western Division Championships at Michigan.

Willison also topped the 100 point mark for the season, just the third time in school history a player has scored in triple digits in a season. She is also just the second Laker to do so (Ann Markley).

Christine Somera scored all three of her goals in the first two quarters as the Lakers went out to a 7-1 lead. Willison added three in the third and both of Mercyhurst's fourth quarter scores as Mercyhurst pulled away in the second half.

Willison added two assists, three steals and four drawn ejections. Somera assisted on one score, had six steals and drew a pair of ejections.

Christie Haibach scored twice.

Gina Meiras stopped 12 shots.

Mercyhurst plays Grove City in the Fifth Place Match at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 22.
