Lakers Run Win Streak to Six

March 25, 2006

GROVE CITY, Pa. - Christine Somera scored at the buzzer to give Mercyhurst its fourth straight win, 8-7 over Slippery Rock at the Grove City Invitational. The momentum carried over to the day's second match, where the Lakers beat Utica, 9-2.

Mercyhurst held the Rock to just a single goal in the second period, which proved to be the difference as both teams scored a pair of goals in every other period.

Cassie Rand led the Lakers with three goals and also had two assists and four steals. Carrie Willison had one goal, three assists and three steals. Somera chipped in with a pair of scores including the game-winner as time expired.

Gina Mieras made nine saves in goal.

The win was Mercyhurst's fourth in a row and improved the team's record to 6-5.

In the win over Utica, Mercyhurst allowed just two goals in the second period and Gina Mieras made 10 saves as the Lakers won 9-2.

Carrie Willison scored three goals to pace Mercyhurst and also grabbed seven steals. Christie Haibach netted a pair of goals and Christine Somera assisted on three scores.

Carrie Willison and Gina Mieras had two more big games as the Lakers routed Grove City at its own invitational, 9-1.

Willison scored three goals, assisted on five and had three steals in the win. Mieras stonewalled the Wolverine offense, making 18 saves.

Cassie Rand matched Willison with three goals. Tessa DiLoreto had a pair of scores.

The Lakers allowed just a single goal in the second period as they cruised to the victory.

With the win, Mercyhurst is now 8-5 on the season and has won six straight. The Lakers will try and extend their streak when they head to the Siena Invitational on April 1 & 2.
