Lakers Split Opening Pair At Penn State Behrend
March 10, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo team split its opening two games at the Penn State Behrend Invitational, losing to Siena for the second time this year and rolling past Utica. The Lakers opened with a 4-2 loss in which Siena fought back from a 2-1 deficit after three periods to score three goals in the fourth. In a low scoring affair, Jacqueline Phillips and Carrie Willison scored the only goals for the Lakers. Christine Somera had an assist, two steals and a drawn ejection, while Gina Mieras kept Mercyhurst in the game with seven saves in goal. In the second game, Mercyhurst dominated an overmatched Utica squad, coming up with 24 steals and getting just the second shutout in the six year history of the program. Mercyhurst led 5-0 at the half and put the game away with five goals in the third. Phillips had three goals, an assist and four steals, while Willison added three goals, four steals and a drawn ejection. Chrissy Genian, Rhonda Marable and Christine Somera added two goals apiece. Mieras made two saves while playing just the first quarter in goal and Cathi Korenich came on to make four saves in the final three periods. Mercyhurst, now 2-5 on the year, will play Queens (N.Y.) and Carthage Sunday to complete the Penn State Behrend Invitational. |
