Lakers Get Outplayed In California
March 2, 2007
Hayward, Calif. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo team ran into a pair of buzzsaws Friday, losing to No. 18 Cal State Bakersfield 18-3 and Cal State San Bernardino 14-5 at the Cal State East Bay Tournament. The Lakers were unable to slow down a high-powered Bakersfield offense in the opening game as the Runners scored five goals in the first and six in each of the next two periods. Mercyhurst hung around with two goals in the first but was unable to keep pace with Bakersfield. Christine Somera was one of three players to score a goal and she added eight drawn ejections. Carrie Willison had a hand in all three goals, scoring one and dealing assists on the other two. Rhonda Marable had the other tally. In the second game, Cal State San Bernardino jumped on top 3-0 after one period and used a 4-1 third to put the match away. Somera had four goals, two steals and a drawn ejection for the Lakers, while Marable added a goal, an assist and three steals. Mercyhurst falls to 1-4 on the year and will compete in the Penn State Behrend Invitational March 10-11. The Lakers will get a rematch with Siena, a team that beat Mercyhurst in its season opener, to begin the tournament before playing Utica, Queens (N.Y.), and Carthage. |
