Lakers Lose California Opener

Hayward, Calif. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo team lost the first of its four games at the Cal State East Bay Tournament, dropping an 11-8 decision to Cal State East Bay Thursday. After a scoreless opening period, Cal State East Bay outscored the Lakers 5-2 in the second and 4-2 in the third to build a 9-4 lead. The Lakers tried to come back, outscoring the host school 4-2 in the fourth, but was unable to overcome the deficit. Renee Sander led Mercyhurst with three goals and she added an assist. Carrie Willison scored twice and had a steal and a drawn ejection. Rhonda Marable had four steals to go with her goal, assist and drawn ejection, while Christine Somera and Jacqueline Phillips each had two drawn ejections. Gina Mieras made 12 saves for the Lakers in goal. Mercyhurst, now 0-2 on the year, continues play in the Cal State East Bay Tournament Thursday and Friday. |
