Detroit, Mich. - Mercyhurst freshman Justine Smith recorded a career-high 16 kills, but Wayne State overcame an opening game loss to win three in a row and earn its fifth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match of the season on Saturday in Detroit. Smith's 16 kills was a match-high, and she committed just two errors on 28 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. She also tallied five block assists. Junior Lauren Kubinski chipped in 14 kills, and after a 30-26 win in the first game, it appeared as if Mercyhurst was on its way to its fourth GLIAC win of the season. Wayne State (10-13, 5-10 GLIAC), however, edged Mercyhurst (16-14, 3-13 GLIAC) 30-27 in game two, 30-28 in game three and 30-24 in the fourth. Mercyhurst totaled 66 kills to Wayne State's 54 and sophomore Julia Butler notched 55 assists, giving her four matches of 50 or more assists this season. The Lakers take a break from non-conference play on Tuesday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center to play Daemen at 7 p.m. |
