No. 14 Hillsdale Tops Laker Volleyball

Hillsdale, Mich. - No. 14-ranked Hillsdale remained tied with Ashland atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division standings thanks to a 3-0 win over the Mercyhurst women's volleyball squad Friday evening in Hillsdale, Mich. Hillsdale (21-6, 12-2 GLIAC) recorded eight blocks to Mercyhurst's two, hit .245 while the Lakers hit .100 as a team, and recorded 10 service aces to the Laker's three en route to a key conference victory that keeps the Chargers in contention for the South Division crown. Mercyhurst, now 16-13 overall and 3-12 in conference play, has lost seven of its last eight conference matches and are 2-11 on the road this year. Hillsdale breezed through game one by a 30-20 score and poured it on in the second game with a 30-17 win. Mercyhurst battled in the third game, recording 17 kills and just nine errors, but fell short, 30-28. Junior Lauren Kubinski led the team with nine kills, and sophomore Julie Butler added 31 assists. Junior Jenna Matson--the team's kills per game leader--continued to be hobbled by an injury. She was limited to two games played recorded a season-low two kills. For Hillsdale, Melissa Bartlett totaled 18 kills on 33 swings and committed just one error. She also recorded five block assists. The Lakers, already guaranteed their first winning season since 2003, travel to Wayne State on Saturday. On Sept. 28 in Erie, the Lakers swept Wayne State for one of their three conference wins on the season. |
