Laker Volleyball Wins Second-Straight GLIAC Contest

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team notched its second-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Friday evening, downing Wayne State 3-0 at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

With the win, the Lakers (14-5, 2-4 GLIAC) have already matched their GLIAC win total from all of 2006 and with their 14th win, they have doubled their overall 2006 win total of seven.

Against Wayne State (5-9, 0-6 GLIAC), the Lakers hit .274 for the match, their third-best mark of the season. In the second game, the team totaled 18 kills and committed just six errors, and in the third game, the Lakers totaled 24 kills while making eight errors. The 55 kills were the most recorded by the Lakers in a three-game match all season.

Mercyhurst pulled away after a 13-13 tie and took game one 30-25 by taking advantage of Wayne State's 13 errors. The Lakers turned up the offense in the second game, receiving six kills from junior Lauren Kubinski to earn a 30-17 win. In game three, The Lakers opened a sizable early lead and coasted to a 30-25 win, thanks to six kills from Kubinski and freshman Justine Smith.

Kubinski finished with 14 kills and three block solos to lead the team. Freshman Katie Fritz totaled 11 kills and notched her third-straight game with double digit digs, as she recorded 12. Freshman Kendall Ashworth led the team with 15 digs, giving her nine-straight double-digit dig performances.

Sophomore Julia Butler recorded a match-high 46 assists, which ties for her third-highest total this season and the most in a three-game match.

Mercyhurst hosts No. 17-ranked Northwood on Saturday at 12 p.m. The match can be seen on the B2 Network.
