Findlay Snaps Women's Volleyball's Nine-Match Winning Streak

FINDLAY, Ohio - For the first time since Aug. 25, the Mercyhurst women's volleyball team found itself on the short end of the scoreboard. The team's nine-match winning streak came to an end Friday, as Findlay topped the Lakers in the Great Lakers Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener in Cory Gymnasium. The Lakers, which opened the season 12-1 and boasted the best start in program history, fell in three games; 30-23, 30-26, 30-11. While Mercyhurst drops to 12-2 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC play, Findlay, which was receiving votes in the most recent CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, improves to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Findlay received 13 kills on 17 attacks from Kelsey Wesaw and 46 assists from Megan Florence. Mercyhurst was led by junior Jenna Matson, who totaled 12 kills on 33 swings. She also added seven digs. Junior Lauren Kubinski totaled seven kills, two block solos and one block assist. Freshman Kendall Ashworth recorded a team-high 13 digs, and sophomore Julia Butler, who entered the match ranked fifth in the GLIAC in assists per game with 11.41, totaled 30. While the Lakers hit .298 as a team, Findlay recorded an impressive .516 hitting percentage, and Mercyhurst recorded just 3.5 blocks in the match. The Lakers continue GLIAC action as they travel to Ashland on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match. |
