Women's Volleyball Opens Mercyhurst Invitational with Two Victories

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2007 season, improving to 6-1 with victories over W.Va. Wesleyan and Seton Hill to open day one of the Mercyhurst Invitational Friday evening.

The Lakers notched a 3-1 win over Wesleyan in the opener by scores of 30-18, 26-30, 30-25, 30-21. Junior Jenna Matson delivered a season-high 15 kills and season-high 19 digs, while sophomore Julia Butler posted her fourth 40-assist match of the season. Butler also added 18 digs and four kills on seven attacks. Lauren Kubinski chipped in 10 kills.

Leading the Bobcats was Lindsey Skorupan with 10 kills. Wesleyan falls to 1-4 on the season with the loss.

Against Seton Hill, the Lakers pulled away quickly, running up an 9-1 advantage in the opening game before winning 30-20. However, Seton Hill would keep it close in the second game, with no team opening a lead of more than three before Mercyhurst closed with a 30-28 win.

In the third game, The Lakers trailed 28-26 but battled back to tie the match at 29-29. After trading points, Matson delivered an ace and a kill to give Mercyhurst two-straight points and the victory.

Matson finished with 15 kills and four service aces. Junior Lauren Kubinski matched a season-high with 17 kills on 36 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. Butler added 38 assists and 17 digs, and freshman Kendall Ashworth chipped in 17 digs and four service aces.

In the Lakers' two matches on Friday, they totaled 31 aces, while the Wesleyan managed just nine and Seton Hill recorded none.

Mercyhurst returns to action at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Holy Family. The final match of the Mercyhurst Invitational is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Mercyhurst defeated W.Va. Wesleyan - 30-18, 26-30, 30-25, 30-21

W.Va. Wesleyan defeated Holy Family - 30-20, 30-24, 30-18

Mercyhust defeated Seton Hill 30-20, 30-28, 32-30.
