Lakers Break Wins Record in Sweep of Grand Valley State

Erie, Pa. - Danielle Zubek's walkoff homer in the bottom of seventh inning gave its Mercyhurst its school-record setting 21st win of the season and the Lakers added a win in game two to add to the mark and pick up the the sweep of Grand Valley State. Mercyhurst is now 22-19 overall and 11-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Grand Valley fell to 30-13 overall and 12-6 in the GLIAC. Game One Jen Feret and Lori Andjelich engaged in a pitcher's duel over the first six innings, with Jessica McNurlen's RBI single in the fourth to score Megan Houston and Jen Feret's solo home run in the sixth accounting for the game's only two runs heading into the final frame. Grand Valley State tied it up in the the top of the seventh with a two-run home run by Breanne Kronberg to make it 2-2. But in the bottom of the inning, after Kim Griffin flied out, Zubek took Andjelich over the fence in left for her third homer of the year and the game-winner. Feret held Grand Valley State to just four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 11 to improve to 11-8. Andjelich fell to 13-5. Elizabeth Smith had two of GVSU's four hits. Game Two Mercyhurst struck first, scoring four times in the third inning, powered by Jessica McNurlen's fifth homer of the year. Maureen Bailey reached on a bunt single to shortstop and later scored on a Melissa Rizzo singled up the middle. McNurlen followed with a three-run shot to score Feret and Rizzo. Doubles by Becky Rudenga, Karen Walters, and Kristin Moleski gave Grand Valley State its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third. Mercyhurst struck again in the sixth an RBI double by Danielle Zubek which scored Kim Griffin. Mercyhurst tacked on a pair insurance runs in the seventh off of singles by Bailey, Feret, and Rizzo. Griffin (6-7) earned the win, allowing only five hits and two runs while striking out two batters in four innings. Feret moved to pitcher in the bottom of the fifth. She did not allow a hit, walked one, and struck out five in three innings pitched. Bailey, Rizzo, and McNurlen all had two hits for Mercyhurst. Bailey scored twice, Rizzo drove in two and McNurlen had three RBIs. Stephanie Cole took the loss for Grand Valley. She allowed all seven runs in seven innings, striking out seven. Mercyhurst will travel to Northwood University for a make-up twinbill on Sunday, April 29th which is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. |
