#7 Lakers Fell to #3 Ashland Twice

Ashland, Ohio - Mercyhurst (18-17 overall and 7-5 in the GLIAC) fell to #3 Ashland University (27-12 overall and 9-5 in the GLIAC) in doubleheader, 6-4 and 9-3. Anne Styne hit her first homerun of the season in game two for the Lakers. Danielle Zubek also hit a homer in game two and Jen Feret hit one in game one. Game One The Eagles scored in the bottom of the second inning to go up 1-0 off of a single to left field by Amanda Thomas. Thomas was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher by Jennifer Alderson. A double to right center by Danielle Rychener brought Thomas home. The Lakers struck in the top of the third with four runs. Erin Ratajczak singled to third base and advanced to second when Styn bunted for a base hit. Both Ratajczak and Styn scored when Maureen Bailey reached on an error by the pitcher. Bailey advanced to third on the error. Feret hit a two run homer over the left field fence for the Lakers to take the lead 4-1. Feret continues to set the school record for most homeruns in a season with 15 blasts. Ashland came back in the fourth to win the game, 6-4, off a two-run blast over the centerfield fence by Kristen McGaughey which scored Nicole Lenart who reached on a single to left field. On the mound for Mercyhurst was Jen Feret who took the loss. Feret pitched 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits, six runs, and two walks. She struck out five batters in the 4.2 innings. Brittany Strier game in for relief in the fifth inning and only allowed 2 hits in 1.1 innings and struck out one batter. Game Two McGaughey hit her second homerun of the day in the top of the first inning to score Bree Beabout who reached on an error for Ashland to go up 2-0. Maureen Bailey singled in the third inning and then stole second to be in scoring position. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch and was able to score on a single by Melissa Rizzo to the Lakers' deficit in half, 2-1. Beabout had a leadoff homerun in the fifth inning to left field. The Eagles added three more unearned runs in the inning with a single, a fielder's choice, and a couple of errors by the Lakers to make the score 6-1. Ashland added their last three runs in the sixth inning with a two-out single, walk, and three-run homer to center field by McGaughey (her third of the day). The Lakers added two runs in the sixth with solo homers by Zubek (her third of the season) and Styn. Kim Griffin took the loss for the Lakers by allowing eight hits, six runs (only two of them earned) and struckout one batter. Carrina Crow pitched one inning of relief and allowed three hits and three runs. Strier also pitched an inning of relief and only allowed two hits in the five batters faced in game two. Mercyhurst travels to Findlay on Sunday, April 22 for a doubleheader slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. |
