Lakers Take Two From Lake Superior

Midland, Mich. - Jen Feret continued to dominate on the mound and at the plate to aide Mercyhurst in its sweep over Lake Superior State, 7-0 and 7-6. She only allowed one hit in game one and went 4-for-8 at the plate while hitting three homeruns in two games. Game One The Lakers came out swinging in game one to score seven runs spread out through the second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. In the second, Mercyhurst took advantage of a Lake Superior error to score two runs. Kim Griffin reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on an error by the shortstop on Anna Glomb's hit. Griffin and Glomb each stole the next bag. A sacrifice fly by Danielle Zubek scored Griffin and moved Glomb to third. Glomb later scored on a single by Maureen Bailey. Feret hit her first homerun, 12th of the season, in the third to go up 3-0. The Lakers continued in the fourth inning by stringing two singles together by Zubek and Bailey; then they took advantage of a wild pitch to move up a base. Pinch-hitter Jessica McNurlen hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Zubek. Melissa Rizzo hit a solo homerun in the fifth, her first of the game and fourth of the season. She then again went the distance in the seventh, this time also knocking in Feret after she reached on a fielder's choice for the Lakers to lead 7-0. Feret only allowed Lake Superior State one hit by Nicole Dunford and to reach two other times on walks. Feret struck out four. Game Two Feret hit her second solo homerun of the day in the bottom of the first to allow the Lakers to take the lead 1-0. Mercyhurst took advantage of more errors by Lake Superior State to score two more runs in the second, 3-0. Feret then homered again in the fourth to score Anne Styn and Megan Houston after they reached on a single and an error, respectively. The Lakers led 6-0 at the end of four. The Lake Superior State Lakers struck in the top of the fifth inning with three runs. Lacey Knoop, Dunford, and Lisa Dahm all singled to load the bases. Nikki Christensen singled to score Knoop and Dunford scored on an error by the third baseman. Erin Retherford grounded out to the shortstop while Dahm scored. Lake Superior scored three more in the sixth inning with a three run homerun by Dunford. April Brandt reached on a walk and Rachel Hall singled before scoring on Dunford's homer to tie the game 6-6. Jessica McNurlen had the winning hit with a solo homerun, third of the season, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Griffin came in to pitch for Lisa Nazarenko in the top of the seventh to earn her first save of the season. Griffin forced to groundball outs and struck out one to win the game. Nazarenko allowed six hits and one walk in six innings while stricking out four. The Lakers will take on Edinboro for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 17th starting at 3:00 p.m. |
