Lakers Split Two at Saginaw Valley

Box Score

University Center, Mich. - Jen Feret knotches a win against the No. 4 team in the Great Lakes Region, Saginaw Valley State University. In addition, Feret helped herself to a homerun in each game. Mercyhurst (15-14 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC) split with the Cardinals (16-9 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC), winning game one 5-1 and losing 2-1 in game two.

Game One

The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second and struck again in the fifth and sixth innings to ensure the win at 5-1.

Melissa Rizzo hit her third longball of the season in the top of the second inning for the game winning run. Kim Griffin reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on Rizzo's homer.

Feret hit her first solo homerun of the day, tenth of the season, in the top of the fifth for the Lakers to extend their lead to 3-0.

Anne Styn hit in the last two runs for Mercyhurst in game one with a double which scored Rizzo and Maureen Bailey in the sixth. Rizzo was hit by a pitch and Bailey singled to move Rizzo to second.

The Cardinals' only run of the game came from a dinger off of Nikki Bigelow's bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Feret held strong on the mound to earn the win by only allowing on earned run and two hits while striking out nine batters. She is now 8-5 on the mound.

Game Two

Saginaw Valley did their damage in the first inning of game two to win the game. Billi Hoeppner bunted for a single then scored off a Stacy Kraatz's double to right center. Kraatz later scored in the inning with a Jessica Anhel single to right field.

The Lakers only had one hit in the game which was Feret's second solo homerun of the day (11th of the season) in the bottom of the first. The only other runner that reached base was Stynn when she was hit by a pitch in the third.

Kari Bowlby earned the win for the Cardinals by limiting the Lakers to one hit and striking out six.

Griffin (3-5) took the loss by allowing nine hits and stricking out four.

The Lakers will face another GLIAC opponent on Saturday, April 14th against Lake Superior State at 1 and 3 p.m.
