Lakers Take Two From Clarion University

Clarion, Pa. - Megan Houston helped Mercyhurst sweep Clarion University in a doubleheader in Clarion on Tuesday by hitting 4-for-7. Houston had two doubles on the day and the Lakers improved their record to 12-13 by winning 8-0 and 7-2.

Game One

The Laker bats got going in the top of the third inning, mashing four hits and four runs. Jessica McNurlen singled and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Nazarenko. McNurlen then stole third base and later scored on a single from Elizabeth Maier. Maier stole second and scored on a single by Houston. Houston followed by scoring on an error off of Jen Feret's hit, who advanced to third. Kim Griffin knocked in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.

Mercyhurst struck again in the bottom of the fourth with eight hits and four runs. Danielle Zubek, McNurlen, Maier, Feret, Griffin, and Melissa Rizzo all singled in the inning and Nazarenko and Houston each doubled to combine for the four runs.

Nazarenko kept the Clarion bats quiet, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings of play.

Game Two

Maier began the second game with a single and stole second base. Houston followed with a single to score Maier and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Maier began the inning with a single and stole second again. A single by Houston advanced Maier to third and Feret recorded the RBI with the third single of the inning. McNurlen advanced Houston and Feret with a flyout to right field. Houston then scored when Anna Glomb reached on an error by the shortstop to increase the score to 3-0.

The Lakers scored their final four runs of the game in the top of the fourth. Erin Ratajczak, Anne Styn, and Maier all singled to load the bases. Houston doubled to score Ratajczak and Styn and moved Maier to third base. Maier scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Feret which advanced Houston to third. Houston finally scored off a single by Zubek.

Clarion University scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning by stringing a couple of singles and a double together.

Carrina Crow allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out two in seven innings of play.

The Lakers look to take two against Tiffin University Wednesday, April 4th at home with a 3:00 p.m. start.
