Mercyhurst and Hillsdale Split Double-Header

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst split Sunday's double-header with Hillsdale College at the Mercyhurst Softball Field. The Lakers are now 10-13 overall and 2-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Hillsdale Chargers are now 9-11 overall and 1-3 in the GLIAC.

Game One

The Lakers took an early lead in the bottom of the first off a two RBI single from Kim Griffin that knocked in Erin Ratajczak and Megan Houston.

Mercyhurst did not stick again until the bottom of the third. Ratajczak started the inning with a drag bunt for a single and was advanced by a fly to the center fielder who lost the ball in the sun by Houston. On a successful attempt to steal second by Houston, Ratajczak scored for the Lakers to go up 3-0. Jen Feret then hit a line drive over the left center field fence for two RBIs. Kim Griffin singled to right field and Elizabeth Maier pinch ran for Griffin. Maier was advanced to third on a double to center field and was scored a on a sacrifice fly down the left field line by Danielle Zubek.

The Lakers then finished the game in the bottom of the fifth when they strung a single and a walk along with a couple of errors by the Chargers to score two runs to end the game at 8-0.

Feret (6-5) recieved the win while only allowing three hits and five walks while striking out seven.

The Lakers earned eight hits and one walk.

Game Two

Mercyhurst began the game with one run in the top of the inning off a single by Griffin who scored Ratajzcak.

The Chargers answered in the bottom of the first with a lead-off double by Brecken Libbe followed by a single by Devon Trimmer to score Libber. Jamie Meyers followed with a homerun over the center field fence to go up 3-1.

In the bottom of the third, Brittany Strier came in to pitch for Griffin and Anna Glomb to catch. Strier allowed a run off of a couple of singles strung together.

Anne Styn began the fourth inning with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ratajczak. Styn was scored on a single up the middle by Feret to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Hillsdale continued to score two more in the bottom of fourth and three in the sixth. The Lakers could only answer two of the runs. One in the top of the fifth by stringing a hit-by-pitch and two singles together adn then in the top of the seventh off a Jessica McNurlen solo homerun over the left field fence.

Griffin (2-4) takes the loss by allowing five hits and five runs while striking out three in two full innings. Strier allowed two hits, two runs, and one walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings. Crow allowed five hits and three runs while striking out two in 2.2 innings.

The Lakers will face Tiffin University for a double-header on Wednesday, April 4th beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
