Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst split with Wayne State on Saturday for the Lakers home and conference opener. The Lakers are now 9-12 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakers Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wayne State is now 17-8 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC.

Game One

A leadoff homerun in the top of the fifth inning for Katie Golub and the Wayne State Warriors won the game.

Game one proved to be a pitchers dual between Jen Feret and Molly Yetman. Feret allowed three hits and four walks in seven innings while stricking out six batters. Yetman allowed three hits and one walk while stricking out 15.

Mercyhurst batters only combined for three singles strung out in three innings. The singles came from Kim Griffin, Anna Glomb, and Maureen Bailey.

Game Two

Megan Houston hit her second homerun of the season over the left field fence in the first inning to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the second, the Lakers strung a walk, an error by the Warriors, and two batters being hit-by-pitches to load the bases and earn a run. Houston then hits a grand slam, first of her career and third homerun of the season, to clear the bases and clynch the game. Griffin walked, moved to second on a passed ball, and stole third. Melissa Rizzo hits a double down the left field line to score Griffin and for the Lakers to take a 7-0 advantage.

The Warriors answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second. Two singles by Lisa Seymour and Stephanie LeClair were followed by a triple by Golub for two RBIs. Amanda Van't Wout singled to left field to score Golub.

The Lakers then put the game away in the top of the fourth inning. Houston began the inning with a one out double to left center. Jen Feret walked and Griffin moved Houston and Feret with a single to left center. Another single by Rizzo scored Houston and Feret. Megan McDonald then went in to run for Griffin at second and was hit around by Jessica McNurlen with a single. Rizzo and McNurlen moved up to second and third on the throw home. Lisa Nazarenko hit a single up the middle to score Rizzo and McNurlen while she batted for Bailey. The two RBIs by Nazarenko put the Lakers up 12-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors had runners on first and third with no outs but could not string a hit together to score anymore runs to continue the game.

Griffin earned her second win of the season while allowing nine hits in five innings.

The Lakers combined for 11 hits in game two.

Mercyhurst is scheduled to play Hillsdale College on Sunday, April 1st at 1:00 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
