Lakers Drop Seven Spots After Road Loss
Oct. 10, 2006 Erie, Pa. - Following a road loss to West Virginia Wesleyan, the Mercyhurst women's soccer team dropped seven spots in the NSCAA Division II National Poll, falling to No. 19 in the country. The Lakers also dropped a spot in the region rankings, falling to No. 3. Entering the game with West Virginia Wesleyan, the Lakers had won 11 consecutive matches and had climbed to No. 12 in the country. But the 1-0 loss snapped the win streak and guaranteed that the team would drop in the polls. Mercyhurst did bounce back with a 4-0 win over Charleston two days later to improve to 12-2 on the season. Grand Valley State, which climbed two spots to No. 1 in the regional rankings, moved to No. 8 in the country. Quincy, which had taken over the No. 1 spot after Mercyhurst's win over Grand Valley State, lost twice this week and fell to No. 2 in the region and No. 16 in the country, down 10 spots. The top four spots in the national poll were unchanged from a week ago with Nebraska-Omaha, West Chester (Pa.), Tampa and Tusculum sitting at the top. UC-San Diego, St. Rose and Metro State are also in front of Grand Valley State, while West Florida and Columbus State round out the top 10. Seattle and Franklin Pierce are No. 11 and 12, while Indiana (Pa.), a team Mercyhurst defeated 2-1, is No. 13. St. Edward's and Truman State are in front of Quincy, followed by Carson-Newman and Washburn. Mercyhurst is ranked in front of Adelphi, Central Oklahoma, Massachusetts-Lowell, Rollins, Chico State and St. Leo. |
