Women's Soccer Falls in Regional Semis, 2-1

Nov. 3, 2006

Stats

ALLENDALE, Mich. -

Goalkeeper Rebecca Heintzman made a career-high 11 saves, but it was not enough at the three-seed Indianapolis (17-4-1) upended the two-seed Mercyhurst (16-4) 2-1 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional.

Amanda Reese scored once in the first half and once in the second half to lead the Greyhounds into the regional championship.  Her first goal came at 20:47 and beat Heintzman into the top left corner from 12 yards.  She then added what would prove to be the game-winner at 80:47 when she placed a ball to the right of Heintzman on a breakaway.

Sarah Powell scored the Lakers only goal of the contest at 87:46 on a free kick outside the box at 87:26.  The score was the 18th of the season for the sophomore.

All three goals scored in the contest were unassisted.

Abby Tracy made seven saves in net for UIndy.

The Lakers ran into a hot Greyhound squad that is 6-0-1 in its last seven games and won a shootout 5-4 in a tie with Northern Kentucky in the opener of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.  UIndy went on to win the conference tournament and jump into the regional as the three-seed.

Indianapolis outshot the Lakers 22-18 in the contest.

Both squads were ranked nationally in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas poll.  Mercyhurst was ranked 20th, while UIndy snuck in tied for 25th.

The loss closes the Mercyhurst season.  The Lakers finish 2006 with a 16-4 record, tying for the second most wins in school history.
