Powell Scores Both Goals in 2-1 Win Over Ashland

Oct. 20, 2006

Stats

ASHLAND, Ohio - Sarah Powell scored her 14th and 15th goals of the season as No. 16 Mercyhurst defeated Ashland 2-1 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.

With the win, Mercyhurst (15-2 overall) remained perfect in the GLIAC at 6-0 and has won eight straight league games dating back to 2005.

Powell's first goal came in the 32nd minute. The sophomore got a one-on-one breakaway with the keeper and scored from 12 yards out. Lisa Casement was credited with the assist.

The Eagles (7-8-1, 2-5 GLIAC) tied the score at 60:15, but just 1:14 later, Powell netted the game-winner on a free kick from 23 yards.

Mercyhurst dominated play for most of the game, outshooting Ashland 16-4. Rebecca Heintzman needed to make just one save in net.

Kelly Usher scored the Eagle goal with an assist from Lisa Burg. Becky Kasper made four saves while playing the first half in goal. Marie Supanich relieved her in the second half and made one save. Both goalkeepers allowed one score.

The Lakers will look for their fifth-straight win on Sunday when they travel to Findlay for a noon kickoff.
