Mercyhurst Lakers Climb Past Pitt-Johnstown 6-0

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's soccer team displayed unselfish play as six different players contributed with goals to help the team climbed past the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats in a 6-0 triumph on Wednesday. The Lakers extend its unbeaten streak to eight games and have earned an exemplary 8-1-1 record this season. The Mountain Cats fall to 4-5-0. In the first half, junior Sarah Powell started the scoring for the Lakers at the 13th minute when she received a ball from sophomore Karla Vogt and placed it past Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper Brittany Pryde. Junior Hailee Maiorano added her second goal of the season unassisted at the 23rd minute. In the second half, junior Christine Rehnert opened up the scoring at the 44th minute when she broke free for a one v. one on the goalie. Less than two minutes later, senior captain Adrienne Sluga added a goal of her own off of a corner kick from sophomore Taylor Hilinski. Sluga paid back Hilinski in the 59th minute when Sluga assisted on a Hilinski goal, bringing the scoreboard total to 5-0. At the 72nd minute, the Lakers tallied its last goal when senior Jacque Sluga assisted on freshman Lindsey Meyer`s first goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Heintzman and the Laker defense limited the Pitt-Johnstown offense to only three shots on goal and two corner kicks. Heintzman now has a three game shutout streak. Mercyhurst returns to the soccer field on Sunday when it hosts Northern Michigan in a GLIAC match-up. Game time is set for 1 p.m. |
