Mercyhurst defeats Saginaw Valley

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst (9-1, 2-0) defeated Saginaw Valley State (6-4,0-1) 2-1 in a Great Lakers Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) soccer game Saturday morning. The win is the Lakers ninth straight.

The Lakers would get on the board first off of a penalty kick from junior Jacque Sluga in the 36th minute. Sluga's goal would be the lone goal of the half.

The Lakers would tally their second goal in the 60th minute when junior midfielder Adrienne Sluga beat Cardinal goal keeper Stacy LaLond. Senior Lisa Casement was credited with her sixth assist on the season.

The Lakers appeared to be on their way to a shutout when the Stephanie Roy converted on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to cut the deficit to one goal. The Lakers would run the clock out for the win.

Mercyhurst goal keeper Rebecca Heintzman tallied seven saves on the day.

The Lakers look to keep up their winning ways as they host No. 4 Grand Valley State Friday at 4 p.m.
