No. 25 Mercyhurst Shuts Out Shepherd, 5-0

ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst (8-1) held Shepherd (4-3) without a shot on goal and held a 34-to-1 advantage in shots as the No. 25-ranked Lakers shut out Shepherd, 5-0 for their eighth straight win. Freshman Taylor Hilinski scored her first two career goals in teh game, both in the second half. Mercyhurst wasted no time as Lisa Casement scored her fifth goal of the season in the sixth minute from Maria Amicone. Sarah Powell extended the lead to 2-0 at 18:38 with an assist from Adrienne Sluga. The goal was Powell's ninth of the year. A goal by Lisa Melander at 27:59 ended the scoring in the first as Mercyhurst took a 3-0 advantage. Karla Vogt assisted on Melander's first goal of the season. In the second half, Hilinski scored two goals off corner kicks. The first came at 48:09, with the second scored at 70:08. Katie Waldin assisted on the first goal, with Amicone picking up her second assist of the day on the final Laker score. Rebecca Heintzman and Karen Eade split time in net for Mercyhurst, but neither made a save as the Mercyhurst defense of Kelly Minnich, Jacque Sluga, Lisa Melander, Jamie Laturell, Karla Vogt, Katie Waldin and Roxanne Fix held the Rams without a single shot on goal. Amy Bell made 10 saves in goal for Shepherd. The Lakers also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Lakers are idle for a week, until they host Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Saginaw Valley at home on September 23rd at 11:00 AM. |
