No. 22 Quincy Edges Mercyhurst In Overtime

Indianapolis, Ind. - Two days after beating No. 16 Indianapolis, the Mercyhurst women's soccer team had an opportunity to knock off another top 25 team. Although the Lakers took a 2-1 lead late in the game, No. 22 Quincy tied the game in regulation and won the contest 3-2 with a goal late in the first overtime. After Quincy's Jenna Boyko put Hawks on top 1-0 with an unassisted goal in the 11th minute of play, Mercyhurst came right back. Sarah Powell scored her third goal in two games, finding the back of the net on assists from Karla Vogt and Lisa Melander to tie the game in the 16th minute. The score remained 1-1 into the latter stages of the second half until Mercyhurst senior Jacque Sluga scored on a header inside the box in the 73rd minute. Braedyn Ordway and Jamie Schroter assisted on the goal. But Quincy would not trail for long as Liz Werkmeister scored an unassisted goal 16 seconds later to send the contest into overtime. In the extra period, Quincy finally ended the game as Becky Fleming scored on a putback from an initial shot by Annie Sokolich in the 98th minute. For the contest, Mercyhurst held a 15-13 advantage in shots and both teams placed six shots on goal. Rebecca Heintzman made three saves for Mercyhurst, while Kelsey Stybr made four for Quincy. Now 1-1 on the season, Mercyhurst will remain on the road to play Tiffin Tuesday at 4 p.m. |
