Rowing Teams Open Spring Season At Knecht Cup
April 12, 2008 Camden, N.J. - The Mercyhurst men's and women's rowing teams won two heats and sent three boats to the finals on the opening day of the Knecht Cup, hosted by Villanova. Mercyhurst's men's lightweight four soared to the grand final by winning its heat and posting a time of 6:50.1, the best time of all 17 boats to compete in the preliminary heats. Mercyhurst was one of three crews to break the 7-minute mark and beat Fairfield by almost nine seconds to win its heat. Fordham finished third in the heat, followed by Loyola, North Carolina and Penn State. The women's club eight also won its heat in the Division I/II race with a time of 7:14.7, edging Philadelphia by three seconds and beating Virginia Tech and Maryland. The men's varsity four placed second in its heat to advance to the finals of the Division II/III race. The Lakers' time of 7:08.3 fell short of Philadelphia's 6:56.9, but bettered New York Maritime, Susquehanna, Vassar and Catholic to qualify for the finals. The women's club four finished fourth in its heat with a time of 9:48.4 and the men's varsity eight was fifth in its heat with a time of 6:15.3 The final day of the Knecht Cup takes place Sunday beginning at 7:00 a.m. KNECHT CUP (CAMDEN, N.J.)
