Women's Lacrosse Names 2008 Team Captains

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's lacrosse head coach Cecil Pilson has announced that senior attacker Courtney Olevnik has been chosen as the team's captain for the 2008 season. Senior defender Holly Brown and junior attacker Breanna Haggerty will serve as assistant captains.

Olevnik, a native of Wooster, Ohio, started all 12 games during the past season and directed the offense on the field while tallying 12 goals and ten assists for 22 points. Defensively she tallied 12 ground balls, five caused turnovers, and six draw controls. In the past three seasons she has seen action in all 44 games and tallied 32 goals, 26 assists, and 58 points for the Lakers. Olevnik is currently seventh in career assists for the Lakers. Last season she also served as assistant captain.

Brown, a native of Carthage, N.Y., played in all 12 games in 2007 and defensively finished with 20 groundballs, eight caused turnovers, and four draw controls. She transferred from Herkimer County Community College (N.Y.) to play her first season with the Lakers in 2007.

Haggerty, who hails from Skaneateles, N.Y., started in all 12 games this year and led the team in all offensive categories tallying 42 goals, 16 assists and 58 points. Defensively, she had 22 ground balls, ten caused turnovers, and 22 draw controls. In the past two seasons she has started and played in all 29 games for the Lakers and tallied 85 goals, 59 assists and 144 points. She is currently fourth in career points for the Lakers after only two seasons.

The Lakers finished the 2007 season with a 7-5 overall record, losing all five games to Top 10 teams. The Lakers set the single game goal scoring record in the 2007 season by finishing the year with a 23-10 win over Presbyterian.
