Haggerty Sets Goal Record in 15-13 Win Over IUP

April 25, 2006

Stats

INDIANA, Pa. - Breanna Haggerty scored six times to set the single season record for goals as Mercyhurst (9-8) closed the 2006 season with a 15-13 win at Indiana (Pa.) (3-11). Kelsey French also reached a milestone in the game, becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach 100 career goals.

The entire game was played in a steady downpour with temperatures in the 40s. Mercyhurst led 8-5 at the half, but the Indians scored the first four goals of the second half to take a 9-8 advantage.

Haggerty tied the game at 9-9 with her 51st goal of the season with 17:30 to play, passing Nadia Shabanza's 50-goal output from 1998.

With the score tied at 12-12, the Lakers reeled off three straight goals to seal the victory. Kristen Toomey broke the tie, Haggerty netted what proved to be the game-winner and Kelsey French gave Mercyhurst some breathing room.

Haggerty (left) finished the game with six goals and two assists. She finishes the year with 53 goals and 86 points, both single season records. Her 33 assists are the second best season at Mercyhurst.

French ended up with 102 career goals, the fourth best mark in school history. Her 41 this season tie for the fourth best total for a Laker. With 66 points this year she posted the third best season and her 175 career points are third all-time, as are her 73 assists.

French had four goals and two assists in the game. Toomey had three scores and an assist. Courtney Olevnik assisted on four goals and scored one herself. Jessie Horeth added a goal and an assist and Paige Christensen assisted on a pair of goals.

Megan Foley made 12 saves in goal for Mercyhurst.

Mallory Zelawski and Jackie Rutkowski scored three goals apiece for IUP. Katie Lee had 15 saves.

Mercyhurst also set team records this year in goals with 210, assists with 117 and points with 327. It was the first time in school history a team topped the 200 goal plateau.
