Lakers Unable To Overcome Deficit Against Adelphi
April 1, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team played No. 3 Adelphi even over the final 30 minutes of play, but the Lakers were unable to make up a five goal halftime deficit in a 14-9 loss to the Panthers Sunday. Although Mercyhurst's Kristen Toomey scored the opening goal of the game, the Lakers struggled to stop Adelphi for much of the opening period. The Panthers scored eight of the next nine goals to build an 8-2 lead late in the opening half. Jessie Horeth and Haggerty both had late first half goals and Mercyhurst went into the break down 9-4. After Adelphi pushed the lead to six on a goal with 21:23 to play, the Lakers tallied four of the next six scores, including three by Haggerty, to get back into the contest. But Adelphi's goal with 4:06 remaining ended any hopes of a comeback. For the game, Mercyhurst outshot Adelphi 45-31, but the Panthers converted on 4-of-10 free-position attempts and got 21 saves from goalkeeper Caitlin Fitzpatrick. Adelphi improves to 6-1 on the year, while Mercyhurst falls to 3-3. The Lakers will be back in action Tuesday at home against CW Post beginning at 4 p.m. |
