Fourteen Players Score for Mercyhurst Lakers in 20-4 Rout of Indiana (Pa.)

Erie, Pa. - Fourteen different players scored goals as the No. 8 Mercyhurst Lakers women's lacrosse team defeated the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks 20-4 Thursday. Breanna Haggerty led the Lakers with three goals and a career high seven assists. The Lakers scored on 20-of-38 shots and won 19-of-26 draws. Mercyhurst improves to 6-2 this season and 2-0 at home. Indiana (Pa.) falls to 1-4 overall. The Lakers came roaring out of the gates with Haggerty getting the Lakers on the board just 47 seconds into the game. In the next 22 minutes, senior captain Courtney Olevnik and Katy Miller contributed two goals a piece while seven other players tallied one goal a piece in a 13-0 run. Six of Haggerty's seven assists came in the first half. At halftime, the Lakers led a 13-1 advantage over the Hawks. In the second half, the Lakers slowed down the ball and were led by two goals from Jackie McCarthy and Haggerty. Alex Slinkard led IUP with two goals. Mercyhurst limited the Hawks to 17 shots all game with eight on cage. Offensively for the Lakers, Maria Rosettie, Celeste Shefferly, Page Christensen, Ashley Dulaney, Meghan Dwyer, Kristen Toomey, and Elizabeth Tice each contributed one goal. Besides Haggerty, McCarthy, Miller and Olevnik who had a multiple point game, Kimberly Masterton finished with two goals and Kate Smith had one goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Jessie Horeth also finished with one goal and one assist. Haggerty's three goals continue her streak to 15 consecutive games and has scored in 35 of her career 37 games. On the defensive side of the ball, Beth O'Neil led the Lakers with four groundballs and one caused turnover. Freshman Maggie Yackel, Kristen Linder and Meghan Dwyer each scooped up two ground balls. Goalkeepers Maeve McGoff and Jessica Raniero split time in cage only giving up four goals on 17 shots. The Laker defensive unit has only given up more than five goals in four games this season and double digits in two. Mercyhurst travels this weekend to face No.10 Pfeiffer Saturday and Belmont Abbey Sunday. Game time Saturday is set for 2 p.m. |
