No. 1 C.W. Post Hands Lakers First Loss

March 14, 2008

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst College junior Breanna Haggerty scored six goals but the Lakers could not find much offense to complement her as No. 1 C.W. Post won a battle of ranked women's lacrosse teams 16-8 Friday. The Lakers entered the contest ranked No. 8 in the country.

C.W. Post jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 10 minutes behind a pair of goals from both Samantha Lyons and Mallory Poole. But the Lakers settled down and tied the Pioneers over the final 20 minutes behind a pair of Haggerty goals to make it 7-2 at the break.

Elaine Williams scored just 11 seconds into the second half to put C.W. Post on top 8-2 but Jessie Horeth and Haggerty scored 11 seconds apart to make it 8-4. But the Pioneers scored eight of the next nine goals to put the game away. Haggerty scored twice in the final eight minutes and Elizabeth Tice scored with 43 seconds left to make the final 16-8.

Mercyhurst outshot C.W. Post for the game 33-31, including 17-12 in the first half. The Lakers' chances to comeback from the halftime deficit were hampered by 15 second-half turnovers and Mercyhurst had 19 for the game.

Jaclyn Napoli led the Pioneers with three goals and two assists and Jenna Miller had two goals and three assists.

Haggerty has now scored at least three goals in 12 consecutive games and she has 22 in the first four games of the season. Yackel had a team-high four ground balls.

C.W. Post improves to 2-0 on the season and Mercyhurst falls to 3-1. The Lakers will try to bounce back Saturday with another tough contest at No. 4 Adelphi at 12 p.m.
