Mercyhurst Defeats Bemidji State, 4-2

Nov. 12, 2005

Stats

Bemidji, Minn. - Freshman forward Valerie Chouinard stretched her scoring streak to seven games with a 3-point effort as Mercyhurst outlasted Bemidji State 4-2 Saturday. The Lakers never trailed in the game as they improved their overall record to 6-5-1. The Beavers, who tied Mercyhurst 2-2 Friday, dropped to 2-6-2.

Junior defender Michelle Bonello's second goal of the season gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 3:19 of the first period. Senior forward Samantha Shirley and Chouinard assisted. The Beavers wasted little time in retaliating as junior forward Helena Tageson scored on the power play at 5:27. Mercyhurst took the lead for keeps late in the opening frame as sophomore forward Stephanie Jones notched her third of the year from Bonello and junior forward Julia Colizza.

Mercyhurst extended the lead to 3-1 at 1:16 of the second when junior defender Jill Nugent lit the lamp for the second time this season with help from Chouinard. The Beavers refused to wilt, however, and drew within a goal when freshman forward Allison Johanson scored a power play tally nine minutes later.

The score remained that way until 7:06 of the third when Chouinard scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season from Shirley and junior defender Lesley McArthur to provide the final margin.

Sophomore goalie Laura Hosier stopped 22 shots to pick up her sixth win of the season. Senior Jill Luebke turned aside 32 of 36 Mercyhurst shots in absorbing the loss. Mercyhurst outshot Bemidji State 36-24. The Beavers were 2 of 6 on the power play while the Lakers finished 0 of 5.

Mercyhurst will rest until the 25th and 26th of November when it invades Princeton, New Jersey, for a pair of games with the Tigers.
