#8 Mercyhurst Edges Clarkson, 2-1

Oct. 14, 2005

Box Score

Potsdam, N.Y. - #8 Mercyhurst spotted Clarkson a 1-0 second period lead before rallying for a 2-1 victory Friday. The Lakers improved to 2-1 while the Golden Knights suffered their first loss in three games.

After a scoreless first period, freshman forward Marie-Jo Gaudet gave Clarkson a 1-0 lead early in the middle period on an unassisted tally at 2:38. Mercyhurst freshman forward Valerie Chouinard got the Lakers even with a power play goal at 13:10. Chouinard's second goal of the season was assisted by defender Michelle Bonello and forward Stephanie Jones. Less than three minutes later, Mercyhurst struck again when senior team captain Samantha Shirley beat Clarkson junior netminder Kira Hurley with what proved to be the game-winner. Shirley's second of the year was helped by forwards Kristen Erickson and Sherilyn Fraser.

Both teams put up goose eggs in the third. Mercyhurst outshot Clarkson 29-13 as sophomore goaltender Laura Hosier picked up her second win of the season. Hurley suffered her first loss in three decisions. Mercyhurst finished 1 for 6 on the power play while the Golden Knights were blanked in five attempts.

Head coach Michael Sisti was pleased with his team's performance: "I was really proud of our team today. They are slowly learning what it's like to play with a bulls-eye on their collective backs. They responded very well."

The Lakers are now 3-0 lifetime against Clarkson. The same two teams will conclude the weekend series Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.
