Mercyhurst Defeats Minnesota State, 4-2

Oct. 8, 2005

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Freshman forward Valerie Chouinard scored the game-winner and junior forward Julia Colizza assisted on three goals as the fifth-ranked Lakers defeated visiting Minnesota State Saturday 4-2 before 125 fans at the Erie Civic Center. The two teams are both 1-1 overall.

Mercyhurst scored its first goal of the 2005-06 season when junior forward Stefanie Bourbeau scored on a rebound with just 17 seconds remaining in the opening period. But the Mavericks stormed right back after the intermission and tied the game at one apiece just 17 seconds in when Amanda Stohr beat sophomore goaltender Laura Hosier. Three more goals would be scored before the second period would end, with senior forward Samantha Shirley and Chouinard scoring for the Lakers and Autumn Conway for the Mavericks.

Junior defender Michelle Bonello scored an early goal in the third period to conclude the scoring. Minnesota State pulled goaltender Laura Brennan with just over a minute to go and a Laker already in the penalty box, but could not score. Hosier robbed Friday's offensive star Maggie Fisher of a goal with just under a minute to play. The sophomore stopped the initial shot and the rebound came to Fisher on Hosier's glove side. Fisher shot the puck, but Hosier dove and gloved the shot.

There were plenty of power play opportunities again for each team. Mercyhurst finished 2-of-7, while the Mavericks finished 1-for-11. Both netminders stopped 29 shots.

Mercyhurst will now travel to Clarkson for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, October 14 and 15. Both games are at 2:00pm.
