Minnesota State Surprises #5 Mercyhurst, 2-0

Oct. 7, 2005

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst began the 2005-06 season as it began the 2004-05 one...with a loss. The Mavericks of Minnesota State got 44 saves from sophomore netminder Brit Kehler and a pair of goals from freshman forward Maggie Fisher, the last a shorthanded backbreaker midway in the third, to upset #5 Mercyhurst 2-0 Friday night at the Tullio Arena. The win was also the first for MSU in eight tries against the Lakers.

After a scoreless first period, one in which Mercyhurst outshot Minnesota State 14-5, the Mavericks got the only goal they'd need at 14:29 of the middle period when Fisher scored from sophomore forward Kristina Banker. The speedy native of South St. Paul, Minn., maneuvered around a Mercyhurst defender at center ice and beat sophomore netminder Laura Hosier on a top shelf wrister, glove side. Fisher then put the exclamation point on the game when she nailed a shorthanded marker, with help from junior Sammy Miller, at 8:15 of the third.

Kehler, the game's first star, set the early tone when she denied Mercyhurst sophomore winger Stephanie Jones on a breakaway. She duplicated the feat against sophomore Danielle Ayearst in the third.

Both teams struggled on the power play. Mercyhurst finished 0 for 11 while the Mavericks ended 0 for 10.

The Lakers outshot Minnesota State 44-19, but couldn't solve Kehler. Hosier, who went undefeated last season at 12-0-0, suffered her first collegiate setback while making 17 saves.

The two teams, who hadn't played each other since early November 2002 in Minnesota, will complete the weekend series Saturday at 2:00pm.
