Mercyhurst Defeats Wayne State, 4-2

Feb. 10, 2006

Box Score

Detroit, Mich. - #7 Mercyhurst remained unbeaten in College Hockey America with a 4-2 win at Wayne State Friday night. The first-place Lakers improved to 18-7-4 overall and to 8-0-1 in the conference. Second-place Wayne State fell to 10-13-4 and 2-2-1 respectively.

Junior forward Stefanie Bourbeau's 14th goal of the season, at 5:06 of the third, broke a 2-2 tie. Freshman Valerie Chouinard then finished the scoring and Wayne State with a 4-on-4 tally at 18:28.

Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead at 5:44 of the first period when sophomore Kristen Erickson notched her 5th of the year at 5:44. The Warriors tied the game 63 seconds later on freshman Sam Poyton's 20th lamplighter of the season.

The Lakers recaptured the advantage at 6:47 of the second when senior captain Samantha Shirley scored her 7th of the year. Shirley had been without a goal for seven straight contests, her last marker having come in a 2-2 overtime tie against the Warriors January 13 at the Ice Center. But WSU freshman Melissa Boal tallied a power play goal six minutes later and the teams went to their dressing rooms knoted at 2-2 after forty minutes.

Mercyhurst outshot Wayne State 38-16 as sophomore netminder Laura Hosier picked up her 11th win of the season. The Lakers were 0 for 4 on the power play while the Warriors finished 1 for 8.

Mercyhurst is now 26-0-1 lifetime against Wayne State. The teams will conclude the weekend series Saturday afternoon at 2:05.
