Mercyhurst and Colgate Skate to 1-1 Tie

Feb. 4, 2006

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - #6 Mercyhurst oushot Colgate decisively for a second straight game but needed a late third period goal from junior forward Julia Colizza to salvage a 1-1 overtime tie. The Lakers, who played to a 2-2 tie with Colgate Friday night, are now 17-7-4 while the Raiders left Erie 9-10-7.

Colgate junior netminder Brook Wheeler gave the Lakers fits Friday by turning aside 35 shots. Saturday, it was freshman Elayna Hamashuk's turn to be stingy. The 6-1 goaltender made 43 saves, her potential shutout spoiled when Colizza banged home a rebound with just over seven minutes to play in the third. It was her 14th goal of the season.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the extra session, but could not find the back of the net. The overtime game was Mercyhurst's sixth of the season (0-2-4). The Lakers are now 6-5-3 at home.

Colgate's only marker came with the Raiders shorthanded early in the first period. Senior forward Allison Paiano, who scored Colgate's first goal Friday, stole the puck deep in Mercyhurst's zone and put one behind sophomore Laura Hosier from in close for her eighth lamplighter of the season.

Mercyhurst, which outshot Colgate 37-15 Friday, doubled the Raiders Saturday with 44 shots. Although Colgate had the weekend's lone shorthanded goal, both teams struggled on the power play in the two game set. The Lakers, 0 for 4 Saturday, finished the weekend 0 for 12 while the Raiders were blanked in 16 opportunities, eight each day. The Lakers lead the all-time series 7-1-2 against Colgate, but are now 0-1-2 in their last three meetings.

Mercyhurst will resume College Hockey America (CHA) play next weekend when it travels to Wayne State for Friday and Saturday night contests. Mercyhurst and Wayne State played to a 2-2 overtime tie in Erie January 13 before the Lakers prevailed 4-2 the next day. Mercyhurst, 7-0-1 and in first place in the conference, is 11-2-1 away from home this season.
