#6 Mercyhurst and Colgate Skate to 2-2 Overtime Tie
Feb. 3, 2006
Erie, Pa. - #6 Mercyhurst and Colgate skated to a 2-2 overtime tie Friday night before 500 fans at the Ice Center. The Lakers are now 17-7-3 overall while the Raiders are 9-10-6.
After a scoreless first period, Colgate senior forward Allison Paiano gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the second as she converted her seventh goal of the season, capping a two-on-one break at 10:50. The lead stood until early in the third when Mercyhurst freshman forward Valerie Chouinard scored her team-leading 17th goal of the campaign at 2:24. Junior winger Stefanie Bourbeau followed four minutes later with her 13th of the year and, suddenly, the Lakers enjoyed a 2-1 advantage. But the lead lasted about six minutes as sophomore forward Kara Leene deflected junior defender Tara French's shot past Mercyhurst sophomore goalie Laura Hosier to knot the contest at 2-2. Despite a late third-period penalty against the Raiders and one aside in the overtime, neither team would score again. Mercyhurst owned a sizeable 37-15 advantage in shots, but Colgate junior netminder Brook Wheeler, the game's first star, turned aside all but two. Wheeler stopped all 43 Mercyhurst shots nearly a year ago, as the Raiders defeated the Lakers 3-0 for their first-ever win against Mercyhurst in eight tries. With Friday's stalemate, Colgate is 1-0-1 against Mercyhurst in the last two meetings, but 1-7-1 lifetime. The two teams will conclude the weekend set Saturday at 2:00pm. |
