Mercyhurst Uses Big First Period to Defeat Boston College, 5-2

Jan. 28, 2006

Box Score

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - #6 Mercyhurst scored four times in 14 shots in the first period and went on to defeat #11 Boston College 5-2 at Kelley Rink Saturday night. The Lakers, who bowed in the last minute to #2 New Hampshire Friday, improved to 17-7-2 overall while the Eagles fell to 13-8-4 and had a seven-game winning streak snapped in the process.

Junior forward Julia Colizza scored twice in the opening twenty minutes, her 12th and 13th of the season, while sophomore winger Sherilyn Fraser collected her second and freshman winger Robyn Law netted her fourth. Colizza's first goal at 1:53 gave the Lakers the early advantage. But BC sophomore defender Cristin Stuart beat freshman netminder Courtney Drennen at 7:43 to knot the contest. The Lakers dominated the period thereafter and scored three times in a six-minute span to take a 4-1 lead to the dressing room. Frasier gave the Lakers the lead for keeps at 10:13, Colizza followed with what proved to be the game-winner at 14:46 and Law closed the first-period scoring at 16:18. The Lakers outshot the Eagles 14 to 7 in the opening period.

After a scoreless middle frame, one in which BC had a slight 12-10 advantage in shots, the Eagles made a last run when sophomore defender Erin Blood scored her second of the season at 1:08 of the third to trim the deficit to 4-2. But Mercyhurst senior defender Danielle Lansing scored her second of the year at 17:11 to finish the Eagles and the scoring. All seven goals in the game were even strength.

Mercyhurst outshot the Eagles 31-24 as Drennen picked up her seventh win of the season in as many decisions. Mercyhurst improved to 3-1-0 lifetime against BC. Boston College senior goalie Alison Quandt (11-5-2) took the loss.

The Lakers will return home to the Ice Center to face Colgate next Friday and Saturday at 7:00 and 2:00 respectively.
