Records Fall In Season-Ending Rout Of Houghton

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst field hockey team closed its season with a flurry Tuesday, defeating Houghton 9-2 at Tullio Field. Emily Warren tied the school record for goals in a game and Vanessa Mourey broke the record for assists in a game and the Lakers hit multiple team marks as well.

The Lakers scored three goals in the first nine minutes to take their opponent out of the contest early. Although Houghton entered the game with an 8-7 record, the Highlanders were quickly buried by a potent Mercyhurst attack.

Warren scored the first of her four goals just 1:54 into the contest, added a second at 16:50 and completed her hat trick just 16 seconds before the end of the opening half. She then added a fourth goal just over two minutes into the second half to tie the school record for goals in a game.

Meanwhile, Mourey was on her way to shattering the record for assists in a game as she assisted on a Haley Brochu goal 5:37 into the contest and added two more in the first half off of short corners. Her last assist, at 60:20, set up Lauren Cohick for her first goal of the season and closed the scoring in the game. Mourey also scored a pair of first half goals to complete the game with eight points.

Mercyhurst led 6-0 at the half and built that lead to 8-0 early in the second half before Houghton scored twice to keep the Lakers from the shutout.

For the game, Mercyhurst outshot Houghton 27-9 and had 18 short corners compared to just six for the Highlanders.

Mercyhurst broke the team record for points in a game with 27, breaking the previous record of 20 set against Mansfield in 2003. The team's nine assists also broke the school record of five, set numerous times. The nine goals tied the record for goals in a gameas well.

The Lakers complete the year with a record of 7-8.
