Mercyhurst Defeats Catawba, 5-2
Oct. 24, 2005 Bloomsburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst won back-to-back games for the first time this season as the Lakers outscored Catawba College 5-2 today in a match played at Bloomsburg. Senior midfield Misty Dennis provided much of the offense with three goals while junior netminder Julie Smith registered 13 saves. Mercyhurst is now 7-11 while the Indians dropped to 5-11. Freshman midfield Haley Brochu snapped an eleven-game scoring drought when she put Mercyhurst on the board with her third of the season, unassisted, at 5:04 of the first half. Catawba tied the game at 20:01, but Dennis put Mercyhurst ahead for keeps with her 5th of the year less than three minutes later. Senior defender Katie King assisted as the Lakers led 2-1 at intermission. Junior forward Lauren MacEllven stretched the lead to 3-1 when she tallied her team-leading 12th of the year, unassisted. at 46:44. Dennis, who'd been mired in a five-game scoring drought herself, then finished her hat trick and Catawba with her sixth and seventh goals of the year at 56:41 and 58:16 respectively. Senior midfield Lindsay Jackson helped on the first goal and Brochu assisted on the second. The Indians scored the game's final marker at 63:39, but could get no closer. The five goals marked the highest output all year for the Lakers who registered 22 shots in the contest. MacEllven's goal was her third in the last four games. Mercyhurst, winners of three of its last four games, will travel to Washington & Jefferson Wednesday for a 7:00pm match, then close the season Saturday when St. Vincent College of Latrobe visits Tullio Field for a 5:00pm tilt. |
