Mercyhurst shuts out Slippery Rock

Oct. 20, 2005

Stats

Erie, Pa. -

Lauren MacEllven had a goal and an assist and the Laker defense did not allow a shot on goal, as Mercyhurst (6-11) defeated Slippery Rock (2-14) 2-0.

MacEllven gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 7:42. Misty Dennis took a shot that was saved by the Rock's Tara Bailey. MacEllven snagged the rebound and punched it in for her team-high 11th goal of the year.

She then assisted on Lindsay Jackson's first goal of 2005. MacEllven got the ball and came up the right side on a breakaway. She centered the ball to Jackson, who beat a diving Bailey into the left corner.

The Laker back line of Katie King, Megan Smaling, Christine Smith and Lauren Cohick helped hold the Rock without a shot on goal. Julie Smith benefitted in goal, earning the shutout without making a save.

Mercyhurst outshot Slippery Rock 24-to-5 in the contest and held a 13-to-4 advantage in penalty corners. In the second half, the Lakers had 15 shots, compared to just one for Slippery Rock, thanks in part to a 10-to-0 advantage in penalty corners in the final frame.

The Lakers return to action on October 24, when they face off against Catawba, in a game to be played in Bloomsburg, Pa. at 11:00 AM.
