Lakers Snap Skid with 1-0 Win Over Slippery Rock

Erie, Pa. - With just over 10 minutes to play, Mercyhurst freshman Sara Wowkowych broke a scoreless tie, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead and eventually a shutout victory over Slippery Rock Wednesday at Tullio Field. The win snapped the Lakers' (4-9) four-game losing streak and gave them their third win in games decided by one goal. It was also Mercyhurt's first shutout of the season. Credited with the shutout was junior goalkeeper Jen Macri, who kept Slippery Rock (1-17) off the board with five saves through the full 70 minutes. The two squads locked in a defensive struggle in the first half, combining for just four total shots through 35 minutes. In the second, Slippery Rock outshout the Lakers 10-8, but at 59:58 sophomore Emily Warren recorded her fifth assist on the season when she ripped a pass in front of the cage that was knocked in by Wowkowych. Slippery Rock goalkeeper Lisa Belcastro made five saves, as well. Mercyhurst has three games remaining on the 2007 slate. The team travels to Louisville, Ky. for games against Lindenwood and Bellarmine on Oct. 20 and 21. |
