No. 10 Shippensburg Blanks Laker Field Hockey
Oct. 7, 2007
Erie, Pa. - With two second half goals, No. 10-ranked Shippensburg pulled away from the homestanding Mercyhurst field hockey team, and sent it to its fourth-consecutive defeat by a 2-0 final score on Sunday. The Lakers (3-9) were outshot 20-3 by the Lady Raiders (9-6) and managed no shots in the first period. Shippensburg also held a 10-1 edge in corners. The 2-0 defeat marked just the second time all season that the Lakers were held without a goal, and it was the sixth time in seven meetings that Mercyhurst has fallen to Shippensburg. In 1999, the Lakers battled Shippensburg to a 2-2 tie, making the series record 6-0-1 in favor of Ship. After playing the first 35 minutes even, Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead on a Kim Davies goal at the 46:03 mark. Mariah Wooters, who assisted on Davies' goal, added one of her own for insurance six minutes later. Mercyhurst sophomore Courtney Loper took a pair of shots and Mercyhurst's lone shot on goal. Liz Lench earned the win for Shippensburg and made one save. Junior Jen Macri recorded 12 saves, giving her two double-digit save performances in just four starts. The Lakers host Slippery Rock on Oct. 17 at Tullio Field. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. |
