MacEllven hat trick powers Lakers over St. Francis (Pa.)
Sept. 23, 2005
Erie, Pa. - Lauren MacEllven capped a see-saw battle with her third goal of the day 16 seconds into overtime as Mercyhurst (3-6) defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 3-2. Neither team scored until a flurry midway through the second half with the two teams combining for four goals in just over five minutes. MacEllven re-directed a shot by Vanessa Mourey from the top of the circle at 52:32 to give MC a 1-0 lead. The Red Flash (0-7) wasted no time answering back, scoring just 1:02 later. Erin Davis got credit for the St. Francis score. At 56:44, Erin Kelleher brought the ball upfield on a breakaway and passed to MacEllven, who finished the play with a backhanded shot into the back of the cage. St. Francis fought right back again, as Belen Albanes scored just 1:03 seconds later to knot the game at 2-2. Both teams had chances down the stretch, but neither was able to capitalize and the game went into overtime. Mercyhurst needed just 16 seconds to seal the victory. Kelleher's shot was denied by Red Flash keeper Kristen Onto, but MacEllven was there and punched the rebound into the goal at 70:16 for her third goal of the game and eighth of the season. Julie Smith went the distance in goal for the Lakers, making five saves. Onto had nine saves for the Red Flash. Mercyhurst outshot St. Francis 28-to-12. The Lakers will look to make it two in a row when the Golden Bears of Kutztown visit Tullio Field Saturday morning at 11:00 AM. |
