Laker Field Hockey Pushes Winning Streak to Three with 3-1 Win at Houghton
Sept. 18, 2007
Houghton, N.Y. - The Mercyhurst field hockey team scored three times in a six-minute stretch just before the end of the first half and coasted to a 3-1 victory at Houghton Tuesday evening. The win extends the Lakers' winning streak to three games. Sophomore Emily Warren had a hand in all three goals, scoring twice and assisting on another. The three goals scored was Mercyhurst's highest offensive output of the season, as the team entered the contest averaging 1.43 goals per game. But Tuesday's win boosts Mercyhurst's record to 3-5, and in the team's three victories, it is averaging 2.33 goals per game. More impressively, the team's defense has limited opponets to just one goal in all three wins and has allowed no more than two goals in six of the eight games. The three-game winning streak is Mercyhurst's longest since ending the 2005 season with four-straight wins. Warren--now the team's leading goal scorer with four on the season--gave the Lakers an early lead with an assist from junior Courtney Monin at the 22:23 mark. Warren returned the favor just 1:52 later, as Monin scored on a penalty corner. Mercyhurst kept the offense rolling with Warren scoring unassisted at the 28:10. Mercyhurst's junior goalkeeper Jennifer Coleman did not see a single shot in the first half, and junior Jen Macri entered at the start of the second half and stopped five shots to keep the Lakers on top. Houghton's lone goal came in the 45th minute when Ashley Hoffman scored on an assist from Amanda Brenon. The Lakers will look to extend their winning streak at Seton Hill on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. |
