Mercyhurst Field Hockey Wins Second Straight
Sept. 16, 2007
Millersville, Pa. - Senior Erin Kelleher's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time. Eight minutes into the overtime session, Keller's shot found the back of the cage, breaking a 1-1 tie and giving the Mercyhurst field hockey team a 2-1 win over Millersville. It was the second-consecutive victory for the Lakers after opening the season with five-straight losses. It was also the second-straight game in which Mercyhurst won in overtime by a 2-1 score, having edged Bellarmine in double overtime at Tullio Field ona Friday. Mercyhurst (2-5) earned the 2-1 victory despite being out-shot 17-4 and Millersville (2-5) holding a 16-2 edge in penalty corners. Millersville fired 11 shots in the second period and three in overtime. Kelleher's overtime goal was the team's only shot of the overtime period, and the Lakers managed to take just one shot in the second. Mercyhurst scored its first goal when Courtney Monin assisted Sara Wowkowych 22:54 into the first half. Millersville knotted the contest at 1-1 on Jaclyn Kulesza's eighth goal of the year just three minutes into the second half, but junior goalkeeper Jennifer Coleman made five of her seven saves in the second period to keep the game tied. Four of Mercyhurst's six games have been decided by a 2-1 score this season, and the Lakers improve to 2-1 in overtime games. Mercyhurst travels to Houghton (N.Y.) on Sept. 18. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. |
