Field Hockey Ousts Bellarmine in Double Overtime

Sept. 14, 2007

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - In a double overtime thriller that ended on sophomore Kristen Fogle's sudden death goal, the Mercyhurst field hockey team earned its first victory of the 2007 campaign, defeating Bellarmine 2-1 at Tullio Field Friday evening.

With the win, the Lakers (1-5) snap a five game skid that saw the team fall by a 2-1 score three times. On Friday, the Lakers scored two unanswered goals--one in the second half and one in double overtime--to complete the come-from-behind effort and drop Bellarmine to 4-4 on the year.

Fogle's goal, her second of the season, came just 29 seconds into the second extra period on an assist from sophomore Emily Warren, who totaled two assists on the day. The Laker offensive attack early in the second overtime was a continuation of the first overtime, in which the team fired four shots, including one that hit the crossbar, in the final two minutes.

Mercyhurst's junior goalkeeper Jennifer Coleman went the full 85:29, stopping six shots and surviving a 10-shot barrage from Bellarmine during the first overtime.

Despite coming out on top, The Lakers fell behind in the first period on a goal from Alisson Kill. In the second half, however, Mercyhurst outshot Bellarmine 7-2 and tied the game at 1-1 when Warren's shot was deflected in by sophomore Brittany Coppola, giving Warren two assists on the day.

Bellarmine held a slight 20-18 edge in shots and also had 13 corners to Mercyhurst's 11.

The Lakers travel to Millersville on Sept. 16. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
